Background of the Study

Financial management is a critical aspect of running educational institutions, particularly private schools, which are often dependent on tuition fees and donations for their sustainability (Bashir & Asiwaju, 2023). Teachers play a pivotal role in the overall success of a school, and their performance can be significantly influenced by how well the school’s financial resources are managed (Shamsuddeen, 2024). In private schools in Abuja, financial mismanagement or lack of adequate financial planning can lead to a scarcity of resources, affecting teachers’ ability to perform their duties effectively, whether in terms of teaching materials, infrastructure, or salaries (Durojaiye & Nwokedi, 2025).

Studies suggest that principals and administrators with strong financial management skills are better equipped to allocate resources effectively, create supportive teaching environments, and improve teachers' performance (Uzochukwu, 2023). Private schools often face challenges such as inconsistent funding, rising operational costs, and limited financial transparency, which in turn impact teachers' motivation, job satisfaction, and teaching effectiveness (Ogundele, 2024). Teachers, especially in privately funded institutions, may find their performance hindered by financial instability, including delayed salaries and insufficient learning materials.

This study seeks to explore the impact of financial management skills among school administrators on teacher performance in private schools in Abuja, with a focus on how the financial decision-making of school leaders influences teachers' job satisfaction and instructional effectiveness.

Statement of the Problem

In Abuja's private schools, financial mismanagement or a lack of robust financial planning by administrators often leads to significant challenges that affect teachers' work environments. The inability to allocate resources properly may result in delayed salary payments, poor infrastructure, and insufficient teaching materials, all of which negatively impact teachers' performance and the overall quality of education provided. Despite the evident link between financial management and teacher performance, there is limited research on how administrators' financial skills directly influence the productivity and effectiveness of teachers in private schools in Abuja.

This study investigates how financial management skills among school leaders affect teacher performance in private schools in Abuja, focusing on the connection between efficient financial planning and improved instructional quality.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the relationship between the financial management skills of administrators and the performance of teachers in private schools in Abuja.
  2. To evaluate the impact of financial resource allocation on the teaching environment and teacher performance.
  3. To propose strategies for enhancing financial management skills among school administrators to improve teacher performance.

Research Questions

  1. How do the financial management skills of school administrators influence teacher performance in private schools in Abuja?
  2. What is the impact of financial resource allocation on the teaching and learning environment in private schools in Abuja?
  3. How can improving financial management skills among administrators enhance teacher performance in private schools?

Research Hypotheses

  1. H₀: There is no significant relationship between the financial management skills of administrators and teacher performance in private schools in Abuja.
  2. H₀: Financial resource allocation does not significantly affect teacher performance in private schools in Abuja.
  3. H₀: Improving financial management skills among administrators does not lead to significant improvements in teacher performance in private schools.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on private schools in Abuja, Nigeria, and explore the relationship between financial management skills and teacher performance. The study will exclude public schools and schools in other Nigerian states. Limitations include difficulties in accessing financial data and potential reluctance of administrators to disclose sensitive financial information.
